A Wicked Practical Joke

I recently posted this story on the Facebook page of Real Life Ghost Stories (RLGS) and it seemed to go down very well indeed; so I thought I would share it as part of my blog on all things supernatural.

It would have been around 20052006 I was still living in the haunted house in Sudbury where an entity had seemingly tried to suffocate me while I slept (see previous blog posts).

We had a friend staying over and he was not wholly comfortable with the house and was aware of its history and many of the strange occurrences. It is fair to say he was more than a little creeped out by the house.

As my wife and I share a similar sick/warped sense of humour we decided to play a bit of a joke on our friend.

In essence I recorded the message (David get out) Daaaaaaaavid Geeeeeeeeet Ouuuuuuuut in my most guttural and demonic voice (it was very good I have to say) and saved it as a ringtone on my phone which I then placed underneath the guest bed.

Our bedroom was next door so we could hear through the wall. Once our friend had settled and had hopefully drifted into a light sleep we rang the phone.

The result was better than we could have hoped and our friend jumped out of bed and started packing ready to depart with some degree of urgency; absolutely convinced that a demon had ordered him to leave the house.

To say that he was traumatised is proably an understatement.

We were in pieces on the other side of the wall, crying with laughter.

Fortunately he did eventually see the funny side and we are still extremely good friends and laugh about it on a fairly regular basis.

I may blog about some of my other practical jokes that I have masterminded over the years. this one is certainly in the top three.

Our Magical Past

I do not for a minute profess to be an expert on this subject. I do have a healthy interest in it though. The work of John Dee particularly is vast and complex requiring extensive knowledge of mathematics, but the manner in which he obtained the information for me is equally as interesting.

It seems to a layman such as I that we are actively discouraged from any thoughts of magic or the Occult.

Occult a word that has become synonymous with devil worshipers, witches and crackpots. (I ‘m sure this has been deliberate).

Not so very long ago (in the scheme of things) in fact just over 400 years ago there was much happening in the world around what might loosely be termed Magic.

Indeed between approximately 1400 A.D. and 1600 A.D. many key figures and events were documented in relation to Magical or Occult happenings.

Between 1362-1468 Abraham of Worms who was taught a system of Magic by an Egyptian mage named Abramelin, this is known throughout the world of witchcraft (though some sections are apparently missing and there is much dispute about the accuracy of translation)

Between 1462-1516 Johannes Trithemius, a German Benedictine Abbot formulated a system for communicating with angels; his work was referenced by John Dee when he began his own well-documented conversations with angels.

John Dee 1527-1608 worked with a scryer by the name Edward Kelly 1555-1597 and for some eight years documented their communications with angels and demons. During this time Dee and Kelly transcribed the Enochian language (the language of angels) and recorded information that only 400 years later could be fully understood. It is believed that Dee and Kelly managed by transmogrification and alchemy the production (or transmutation) of gold from base metals such as lead.

Interestingly Dee and Kelly documented all of their endeavours in detail; yet the period in which they achieved transmutation appear to have been conveniently lost.

There is speculation that the Egyptians used this method as they had much gold yet no natural source and no means of reaching gold-rich areas. It is thought that meteoric glass is used in the process and this is what may more commonly be known as the ‘Philosophers Stone’.

It is further speculated that Dee, who was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. managed to use Enochian magic to cause the Spanish armada to flounder in stormy seas. Queen Elizabeth is often referred to as the Virgin Queen but also the Witch Queen. Dee predicted she would come to the throne and have a long and fruitful reign (she is regarded by many as the greatest of all British monarchs)

Then came King James, the first Stuart, to sit on the British throne. King James commissioned the English translation of the Bible known as the King James Version (KJV) the best selling book of all time. James also wrote a book called Daemonologie; the title speaks for itself. Remember King James was of high intellect; speaking and reading several languages including Greek and Latin.

King James also introduced the 1604 Act against Conjuration, Witchcraft and dealing with evil and wicked spirits.

King James believed he had been the victim of witchcraft, indeed an attempt on his life. This was apparently confirmed during the torture of a suspected witch, Agnes Sampson, when she relayed to him the words he had spoken to his wife on their wedding night.

It is obvious that many of those tortured confessed only to end their pain, as the torture methods employed were horrific. But in James’ own accounts it would appear he was told things by the accused that they could not have reasonably known.

Interestingly (only by coincidence) the year that King James was born was the same year that Nostradamus died. It is likely that King James’ mother Mary Queen of Scotts would have met the French Seer in the French court as he was an advisor to Mary’s mother-in-law the wife of King Henry II of France; Catherine de’ Medici. (herself speculated to have been an occultist) There is much controversy around the predictions made by Nostradamus including his seeming prediction regarding the twin towers 9/11.

Many of those who were accused of witchcraft did nothing more than use natural herbs and suchlike to help heal and remedy common afflictions, many were midwives. I would ask then; are the large pharmaceutical companies, not simply corporate witches?

We have been conditioned by science to dismiss ideas of magic and spirits or even divinity; yet science is unable to explain much. Science seems to simply take the view that if they cannot prove something definitively one way or the other then it does not exist.

I would argue that it is simply beyond our current capability and understanding and that we have lost abilities that we once had when we were more at one with the natural world, and when we were not told what to think by those who wish to control us.

We have literally had the abilities beaten out of us over hundreds of years.

Let’s be brutally honest, if embracing your so-called magical powers was likely to end in your shin-bones being shattered in a Spanish boot; before you were burnt alive; would you not choose instead to suppress and deny such gifts?

John Dee, if he were alive today, would still be revered as a genius. He and Kelly recorded under the direction of angels a new language (something impossible to invent spontaneously regardless of intellect) as well as mathematical concepts that are only just now being understood over 400 years on.

How can that be?

Black Mass

Picture 1 & 2 show a dark shadow that moved around the room shortly after we had done some glass moving and dowsing. the third shows a cross over the sofa.

This was not caused by tricks of the light, the odd shape of the mass and the speed at which it moved were not due the external casting of shadow. the lighter are above the sofa is light from the large front window and again the cross on the window is not due to shadow cast from the window pain as the main central window was a full pane with no openers. Aslo note picture 2 the light from the window is clear but no cross shaped shadow is apparent.

I am currently trying to find photographs taken at around the same time which clearly show a number of Orbs.

Although as previously mentioned in other blog posts the house was certainly haunted after we conducted the glass moving and dowsing the house seemed a little more oppressive and a little more sinister.

These picture date back to 2007 the black mass appeared on several occasions which is why we had a camera at hand to capture it as it happened.

Haunted Rocking Horse

It would have been around 1994; I was at the time with my second wife and I was working for the maintenance department of a local housing association.

One of the housing association tenants was an elderly gentleman who had been working for some number of years on a solid wood rocking horse. (pictured)

I have sifted through all of my old photos and cannot find one just of the horse itself, so the picture shows my son climbing onboard.

The tenant always gave me a progress report on his project it really was a labour of love. I must have watched the final stages over the period of a year or so, and it was always a talking point whenever I attended to undertake repairs to the property. (always with a fresh pot of tea in hand)

When he announced that he had completed it, I asked him what he was going to do with it. He hadn’t really considered this; so I asked if he would consider selling it to me as a gift for my son; he said he would give it some thought but that it had been such an undertaking over a number of years he felt attached to it.

I asked that if he decided to sell it, he that would at least give me first refusal and he agreed.

Some months later I attended the property to find that the gentleman had died, He was in his eighties and had not been ill. He had died in his sleep.

I immediately wondered about the rocking horse but did not wish to seem insensitive. His wife though brought it up and said she wanted to sell it and that her husband had mentioned I had shown interest in it.

We agreed a price and I returned the next day to pay for it and to collect it.

My son loved it and it took pride of place under the rear living room window. In the photo it was moved temporarily to make way for the Christmas tree.

After some number of months, we started to notice that the living room wall lights would be switched on in the morning when we came downstairs. Obviously the first couple of times we put it down to us forgetting to switch them off but then we made a conscious point of switching them of and confirming to the other that we had.

This continued to happen intermittently. Over the next year or so our son outgrew the rocking horse and we moved it upstairs to our bedroom as an ornamental feature for want of a better phrase.

Shortly after this move; my wife woke me in the night to say that the rocking horse was rocking by itself. I didn’t even bother to look and told her she was dreaming and to get back to sleep.

The following night I woke to the sound of the horse rocking (the rocking mechanism had a distinct squeak to it) as I looked, I could see the figure of the elderly gentleman astride the horse; rocking back and forth.

We felt no threat or menace, but we decided we would sell the horse just in case things potentially escalated (obviously we did not advertise the fact the horse may have been haunted (a bit naughty really) that as they say was that.

I do regret selling the horse and I do hope it has not ended up in a glass case next to Annabelle.

Paranormal Activity

I currently live with my wife in a house which is over 200 years old. The house has always felt calm and peaceful. Visitors often comment how well they sleep.

We have now lived here for over six years and have only had one instance of potential activity.

Unfortunately my father-in-law died two days prior to us moving home. The move was a significant one as we were moving from Southampton to the Lincolnshire coast.

Obviously these were extremely testing times emotionally. The house genuinely has a very calming effect and just feels extremely homely given the history of the house, I think we half expected it to be haunted and we do live less than 2 miles from what has been claimed to be the most haunted place in the UK https://abandonedheritageuk.blogspot.com/2013/09/skidbrooke-church-saltfleet.html

A year or so after the death of my father-in-law we were woken one night to our bedroom lights (pictured)switching on and off by themselves.

The light consists of 10 high power halogen bulbs and can be likened to a football pitch floodlight when lit.

The light switch is touch sensitive as well as remote control and makes a distinctive click as it is activated.

We believe that this was my father-in-law trying to make contact, at the time my wife was not yet ready to accept that this might have been the case.

However my fathers-in-law’s previous girlfriend reported much the same had happened to her in the kitchen of her home and that she had a yes/no conversation with him, (one flash yes, two for no) my mother-in-law also reported a similar event with their TV.

All three events occurred at around the same time. I recognise people will say that it’s all coincidence. Our light has never malfunction before or since that one-off event.

Three separate events of a similar nature all in a short space of time, is it really just coincidence?

Yes this is True!

My next experience happened a year or so after I met my third wife. I moved into what was her long-term family home; a home which had much history in the area of paranormal activity.

It would have been in 2005; It was the early hours of the morning when I became aware that my face being pressed into the pillow by what felt like someone sat astride my chest.

I was making a noise that sounded like I was being suffocated, (this according to my wife who was woken by the noise). Initially she thought I was having a bad dream and attempted to rouse me.

Realising I was actually awake she could see I appeared to be being pinned down. She instinctively put her hand to my chest which she said was ice cold. (my wife tells me I’m hot in bed, I’ll take a compliment where I can) As soon as she touched me it was over, and my temperature returned to normal.

My wife then informed that a previous partner had had issues with a sprit which he often saw and which some nights tormented him endlessly. This had included seeing the spirit/ghost stood outside the bedroom door as he returned from the bathroom.

It was clearly guarding the bedroom and he dare not move.

I like a good horror movie and it’s usually very clear when a ghost or spirit wants you out, you have to wonder why people stay. (apart from the fact there would be no film if they just simply got up and left).

I figured rightly or wrongly that it was perhaps a test of my commitment, so I stayed, (though never quite felt comfortable when I was in the house alone) there were no further attempts on my life.

We did however a year or so later undertake some dowsing and glass moving.

Both activities did shed some light on the number of spirits in the house and whether their intent was good or bad.

We established that there was a female who was good and a little mischievous; a male who was perhaps attached to my wife and another male whose intent seemed unclear.

The mischievous female seemed the dominant spirit in the house and it tied up with some of the events over the years that my wife’s family had witnessed and experienced; this had included a bowl freely spinning around on the coffee table in view of my wife her sister and mum. My wife had been a young child at the time.

My father-in-law who has since sadly passed away; was an antique restorer and one of the rooms at the house was used to store furniture. I understand that sprits can become attached to furniture and it is possible I suppose; that the spirits may have been effectively imported as we did try and establish the past history of the property but there was nothing to suggest anything untoward had happened there.

I do believe that the spirit which attacked me is attached to the house but seemed either protective or possessive over my wife.

Given events that have happened since we moved from the home, we both believe that somehow this entity has cursed us. Watch for future posts where I will explain the reasons why, we have concluded this.

What is Popular at the moment?

It seems that there is a good appetite at the moment for all things supernatural and Witchy. The American TV series Supernatural is the longest running live action series in the history of American TV with 15 seasons. The new Series The Witcher on NETFLIX already has a huge following and Sabrina the teenage witch is also making a comeback.

Lucifer has also been a popular series which started on Amazon and is now on NETFLIX. The BBC and NETFLIX collaborated on the 3 part drama Dracula (I felt that it was a wasted opportunity, but many loved it).

My second book in the series ‘When Darkness Calls’ tells the story of Cathy. A powerful modern day witch created over 500 years as a hybrid. Cathy is trying to resist the call of the Darkness and is determined to use her powers for good.

Using a Black Mirror Cathy contacts the angel Madimi, the same angel contacted by John Dee and Edward Kelly in their own well documented scrying sessions.

The book covers Cathy’s life from cradle to the point that her story is picked up in Sold Out/Soul Doubt. the first book in the series. Cathy’s story can and perhaps should be read first though.

Cathy’s story leaves an 8 year gap with the intention of writing a mini series that documents a period in her life that she refers to as her ‘Years of Forlorn Absolution’

Dowsing

Many years past before I had any further dealings with the spiritual world.

It was around 1998 I was working as a lecturer for a local training provider and bumped into  someone who I had known from a previous role.

The man in question was a big burly Yorkshireman of around 6’2” and 17 stone. (I hope he reads this and comments)

He was and still is a no nonsense type of guy. E speaks as he finds and does not suffer fools. (in many ways much like me).

He is very experienced in his area of work and very intelligent. Pretty much the type of man who is well respected and if he says that something is so, it almost certainly is.

One evening we were doing some overtime, refurbishing the workshop area as it could not be done through the day as it was in use; I’m not sure how it came up in conversation but he mentioned dowsing.

Now if I had heard this from anyone else I would probably have laughed despite my previous experiences.

However he was compelling and got to work making some rods from brazing rods. He gave me a demonstration; after which he asked me to have a go, so I tentatively took the rods held them as shown and went through the individual calibration process to verify the rod movement for Yes and No as this is different for each person.

I was amazed at how this worked and the sensation in your fingers, the speed at which they move and the consistent way in which they move.

They are clearly not just for detecting water. I used them quite heavily initially and they correctly predicted events, such as the outcomes of other peoples relationships. I know it could be argued that if I already held a belief or opinion that I would influence the rods but often they would actually oppose my own view. And were correct.

I have later used crystals to the same effect and have had some really interesting results.

I am as most people will tell you a very sceptical person as well as being quite pessimistic.

However I am the first to say, that the rods do move themselves and are clearly tapping into an energy. Is that our own energy? Maybe its’s naturally occurring external energy?

What drives the response though is less clear; is it simply deep-seated intuition that we are accessing, or answers from another plane?

Personally I think it is based on our own deep-seated 6th sense or perception, which we are able to access using this method (an amplified gut feeling if you like)  I do believe that out DNA has locked into it all of the past experiences of our entire ancestry. However we are unable to directly access this. Anyway more on dowsing later.

More Ghosts and Spirits

In 1986 I started work with a local Community Programme.

I was given the role of teamleader and put in charge of half a dozen younger lads, the premise of the scheme was that the Community Programme would provide the labour for free if the approved project bought the materials, this allowed youngsters to be given a taster of various trades at the same time providing help to community projects which otherwise may not be completed.

We were given two projects a cricket pavilion and work on a chapel in the same remote village, the chapel project was to excavate underneath to make a toilet and kitchen area.

My primary responsibility was the chapel and another team was working the pavilion project though we pooled resources if required as the two projects were a 10 minute walk apart.

Generally there were 4 younger lads; there was also a joiner who would have been in his early thirties. He was an unassuming and pleasant individual who was quite  softly spoken and he was a bit of a hippy.

He was quite private and nobody knew much about him. The others were typical 18-19 year olds a bit loud and a bit lippy, but good lads really.

What tended to happen once we had done the excavations was that the chapel would run out of funds and we would having nothing to do.

As we were all dropped off and left for the day we had to fill our time; initially this involved playing cards generally a game referred to as Wogga which used two packs of cards and the jokers and was similar to rummy but you had a bigger hand of cards.

One day we were chatting in general and one of the lads told us that he and his parents often used a Ouija board to contact his sister who had died at a young age.

We were all intrigued, some were dismissive as you might expect, but long story short, we decided to make our own board and give it a go.

Using some plasterboard we wrote the alphabet, number 1 – 10 and yes and no at either end; we placed a sheet of glass on it and borrowed a glass from the vestry.

Initially we let the lad with experience lead the way, explaining the rules, the most important seemingly was to not let the glass outside of the circle or oval as it was; that we had created with the letters and numbers.

We were doing this underneath the chapel; we had a makeshift table and seating made from anything we could find, bags of sand, boxes pallets etc.

It was as you might imagine quite cool under the chapel, but not cold, we probably started this around April 1986.

There was a small amount of natural light from the door and a small window as I recall and then a couple of makeshift temporary lights.

We absolutely felt safe and protected as we were after all inside a chapel.

So off we went ‘is there anybody there’ we would ask; my recollection is that the glass would start to move. (but glass on glass is perhaps not the best combination), it would start with the noise you  would expect, quite a shrill screech as it started to move but then it seemed to almost lift away from the glass and would be moving around the board at quite a pace, there is no way any single individual could be controlling it.

We would try and keep up with what is was spelling out and quickly learned to use closed questions where a yes or no response was likely.

It was all very interesting and we became almost obsessed with it and hoped to arrive at site to find no materials so that we could get on the Ouija board.

It was clear we were doing something right as the temperature would drop noticeably, to the point where we could see our own breath and the glass would actually frost up at times.

We had some laughs one lad asked a spirit  ‘where are you in the room’ and it replied that it was sat on his knee, one lad had forgotten his pin number and it correctly gave it to him, generally though it was fairly innocuous.

Then one day the glass moved around and stopped in front of the hippy guy and would not move, the lad who was experienced said its someone for you, now although he had observed, he had not until now put his finger on the glass; he still refused. But he asked it who it was. The answer came back, ‘your sister’ the colour drained from his face, but he was not convinced so he said ‘if you are then what happened at your funeral’ it spelt out ‘finger nail’ at this point he broke down, we knew nothing of a sister and when he gathered himself he explained that she had been raped and murdered and that at her funeral he was a pall-bearer and had caught his fingernail on the coffin and that it had bled for days. It also turned out that he had been to Prison, as he had found the perpetrators before the police and had taken a hammer to them.

Now during this time, we were in the run up to the World Cup and obviously young lads got to asking who was going to win the World Cup, we got back a surprising response as it said England, obviously we were all astounded at the prediction and were eager then to go put a bet on, however it spelt out that we could not pass the information on to anyone or put on a bet or the result would change.

We all agreed to abide by those rules, so we watched England against the odds fight their way to the quarter finals against Argentina as we all know they lost due to Maradona’s ‘hand of god’ goal we were straight to the Ouija the next day asking what went wrong.

The reply was that someone had indeed placed a bet, we all looked around the table, looking for the traitor and one of the lads indeed put up his hand and confessed ‘I couldn’t resist… they were doing so well’

Could it be that we were the reason England didn’t win in 86?

After this things started to take a turn for the worse, these lads were getting a bit bored and started to ask to speak to such things as the spirit of Hitler.

As I said we had been told not to allow the glass out of the circle and on a couple of occasions we had that issue occur, we were told if the glass exits the circle that the spirit may then either possess the nearest individual or become a poltergeist.

The strange thing was that when the glass was clearly moving off the board, rather than simply taking our fingers off the glass, it seemed that you could not.

We had a couple of situations where with one finger on the glass the other hand was being used to try and push the glass back, the force was quite something when you have 3 or 4 young men trying to push a glass back onto the board and seemingly unable just to take their hands off the glass.

On what would be the last outing for the Ouija board we contacted a spirit and it went to each person in turn and waited for them to put their finger on the glass.

The lad who had talked us into trying the Ouija in the first place, said, ‘we have a bad one here, its trying to get maximum power so it can get off the board’ he refused to put his finger on and that was good enough for me, I actually left and decided to walk up the road the cricket pavilion.

When I returned they were all ashen faced and the board was smashed, it turns out they apparently had the spirit of a young man named Wayne, aged 19 who was killed during active service in Northern Ireland, he was none too happy we had not put our fingers on and had said he knew where I had gone and that he was going to get me… The glass had come out of the circle and they smashed it immediately as is apparently required.

All of them seemed visibly shaken and that was the last time we used the Ouija board. I spent months looking over my shoulder.

More to follow…
